The mission of Social Action is to promote leadership, advocacy and empowerment to effect social change and public policy. The work of Social Action is to stimulate social action and education of chapters on current issues.
The Social Action Committee of Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter develops programs and activities that promote the chapter’s participation and involvement in addressing issues that both impact and support the community. Past initiatives have included forums highlighting key matters such as predatory lending, sentencing guidelines, and juvenile justice. Special events such as our Constitution Day program, held at the National Constitution Center, have served the adult and youth populations and have always garnered strong support and attendance.
While Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is non-partisan, voter registration, education and mobilization activities are perennial and the committee’s activities range from information dissemination to high school presentations and outreach to candidates’ forums. Members make annual legislative trips to the state capital and the nation's capital to meet with and discuss issues of importance with legislators. We regularly work with other organizations in the community to increase our capacity of service. Organizations have included Good Schools PA, Philadelphia Citizens for Children & Youth (PCCY), and Women Vote PA. Recent initiatives include supporting programs conducted by collegiate members of Gamma Chapter (UPEN); annual workshops with Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC); and working with members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to coordinate PA State Legislative Day, wherein members of each group travel to Harrisburg to jointly meet with legislators and other state leaders.
In 2005, the Social Action Committee was the recipient of the Sadie T.M. Alexander Presidential Award, presented at the Sorority’s Regional Conference, for exemplary Social Action projects and activities that align with Delta’s Social Action Plan.
